FAQ

If you don't see an answer to your question here - or just want a better answer ;)
- you can ask the band HERE.

Q:What kind of music do you play?

A: You can check out our samples on the DOWNLOADS page, or at our MySpace page. Many would call it progressive rock, while others say it's modern alternative with heavy doses of experimental music. Gravity Tree has been compared to King Crimson, Glass Hammer, Frank Zappa, Happy the Man, Jethro Tull, Underground Railroad, Gentle Giant, Primus, Rush, early Genesis, Oingo Boingo, Huffamoose, Furslide - even AC/DC (?). Some of these are bands that Gravity Tree likes; others are, shall we say, surprising comparisons. (See more on that below). Music shops and websites have dropped us into many genre categories: Math Rock, Avant-Prog, Art Rock, and sometimes even Metal or Jazz! No one has mistaken us for Pop, Country or Hip-Hop, so we are not entirely void of proper categorization. Ultimately, we leave it to you to decide.

Q: What is your latest release? / When are you going to have another full-length MP3 song available?

A: We released the song "Building" as a web-only special mix several months ago, and you can get it at most of the usual places online (iTunes, Amazon, eMusic, etc.). We are also always working on new material, and we'll release those as we can. We have a large back catalog, so as older material gets finished, we'll release that as well, and if you are on our latest newsletter list, you might get it for free.

Q: I can't tell what you sound like from 30 second clips at the web shops. Where else can I hear your music?

A: Sometimes, all you really want to do is hear the music. 3 of our songs are streaming full-length, on Jango internet radio.

This site's DOWNLOAD page also features 4 songs in the iSound player (scroll down the page to see it). If you're on MySpace, we have full-length streams of songs "Building" and "Aim to Please" in our MySpace playlist, with more to be added soon. Perhaps the largest number of full-length Gravity Tree songs, however, can be heard in our music player at Power of Prog. Hopefully these streams will give you a good idea of our sound.

Q: Where can I get your latest CD?

A: The latest CD is "ULTIMATE BACKWARD", which is generally available at most of the places that currently carry "Life or Dessert?". Both CDs can be found at CDBaby.com, iTunes, Amazon.com, Rhapsody, Napster, CDUniverse, Wal-Mart, IndieRhythm.com or by going to the Links page and clicking on one of the store links and banners there. If you prefer not to use an online service and actually want to pick the thing up and stare at it before you buy it, there are more than 2000 stores worldwide that will order it for you. Check our LINKS page for direct connections to online stores and details about walk-in music shops to find Gravity Tree music, or email us for details about your favorite store...

Q: What about the bit torrent sites? Why shouldn't I just download your music for free?

A: After deciding you like the music we make, you of course still have a choice; you can snag it from sites that are giving away our music (without our permission btw, so they've stolen it in the first place), or buy it from us and support the music so we can keep making it. Also, since these share sites don't run a legitimate business, they might be planting things in downloads (viruses, etc.) that can harm your computer or music device. Getting it from a major online music outlet gives you some security (and they have customer service if something is wrong with the download).

Here's something to think about: We support ourselves with music in one form or another. It's our job. Most of those "free" sites are not free for us - they cost us hundreds of dollars a year, often more. That's because we don't get paid for your download, and there's no royalty paid for its use because many of those sites operate illegally.

It takes a lot of time, energy and actually some money to create and release the music we make. Charging 99 cents for a song seems very fair for everyone concerned. After all, you probably wouldn't go to work if they didn't pay you, right? That's what other sites handing out our songs for free is like for us. Besides, there's a legit way to get our music for free: We often give away songs through our website for those who sign up for our newsletter, and also to loyal fans.

Q: What are your musical influences?

A: There have been many, and it is hard to narrow the list, but here are a few of our more prominent influences: The Beatles, Bernard Herrmann, Joe Walsh, Bill Nelson, Peter Gabriel, Lizst, Brian Eno, Al Di Meola, King Crimson, King's X, Brand X, Jerry Goldsmith, Henry Kaiser, Laurie Anderson, Todd Rundgren (and Utopia), Fred Frith, Bjork, Ravel, Yes, and John McLaughlin (of Mahavishnu Orchestra fame) to name just a few. Sometimes it's the music, sometimes it's a particular player in the group that influenced us.

Q: I've ordered your CD but it's taking forever to ship. I've been told it's backordered. What's up?

A: If you have been waiting for your CD order for more than two weeks, please email us right away! Tell us where you ordered it (include a link if it was an online shop) We'll get on top of it, and reply once we know what is causing the delay (We don't control shipping for these stores, but we can bug them a little more directly than you can, and can usually get things moving). Sorry for any inconvenience.

Q: I work for a radio station / magazine / ezine. How do I get a promo copy of your CD?

A: Our last CD, ULTIMATE BACKWARD, was released a couple of years ago, and we've run out of promo copies. We're close to out-of-print status on LIFE OR DESSERT?, so no promos right now for that one - sorry. Of course you can still buy a retail copy at a shop like CDBaby. We're especially interested in progressive music organizations (who actually understand and appreciate this underdog of music genres). Please email us (with your station ID or magazine/ezine information and URL of course) to request a new promo disc as soon as they become available.

Q: What happened to your links to Tower Records, Imeem, Big Balloon Music, etc.? I don't see them listed on the store page...

A: Unfortunately some stores have gone away for various reasons. If they're bought up or open their doors in a new format, we might be back. We removed our links to these sites to avoid confusion (but if you find one still active, let us know). You can still find our CDs at many online and as many as 2000 brick-and-mortar stores. Try CDBaby or Amazon - they'll probably always carry our music.
